The formal ground-breaking ceremony for the student housing development at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) was held on 25 March 2026, marking a significant milestone under the National Student Housing Programme (NaSHP). The project is being delivered with full financial support and oversight from Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL), which is providing debt financing for its execution.
The event signified the transition from planning to physical construction, reinforcing ongoing efforts to address the student accommodation deficit through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework.
The ceremony attracted key stakeholders from across government, academia, and the private sector. Representation included the Enugu State Government (through the Honourable Commissioner for Education), the university leadership led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aloysius Michael Okolie, and the Registrar, Ambrose George Ugwu. Also in attendance were representatives of TETFund, the Managing Director of the Student Housing Company, Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL), Epping Forest Engineering (Independent Project Managers), as well as host community leaders and student representatives.
A symbolic highlight of the ceremony was the laying of foundation blocks by distinguished dignitaries, underscoring collective ownership and commitment to the successful delivery of the project.
Strategically, the ESUT ground-breaking represents a flagship rollout in the South-East region, validating the effectiveness of the PPP model in translating policy into tangible infrastructure. It further strengthens investor confidence and sets a precedent for similar developments across participating institutions nationwide.
In summary, the event marks not only the commencement of construction but also reinforces stakeholder alignment, institutional readiness, and the broader vision of delivering sustainable and affordable student housing at scale.
